Checklist for a great day out

Renting a boat in Amsterdam and self-driving on the Amsterdam canals isn't something you do every day. That's why we've created a checklist for you. Please read through it carefully so you can be sure you won't forget anything.

1. Bring a valid ID

Please always bring a valid ID (passport, driver's license, or ID card). Otherwise, our insurance doesn't allow us to hand over a boat to you.

2. Please arrive 10 minutes early

Before you set sail, we'll personally explain how your boat works, what the most important rules on the water are, and what beautiful routes you can take. We also need to (unfortunately) fill in some paperwork with you. That's why we ask you to arrive 10 minutes before your start time. That way, no valuable sailing time is lost. Our jetty is conveniently located on the edge of the Jordaan, on the west side of the city center. The exact address is opposite Nassaukade 155 on the quay.

3. Bring food & drinks

You're welcome to bring your own food and drinks. In fact, we highly recommend it! Boating becomes even more fun with a tasty snack and/or drink. It's most convenient to do some shopping beforehand so you can make the most of your rental period (on the water).

4. Bachelor/bachelorette parties are NOT allowed

We do not allow bachelor or bachelorette parties on our boats. If you missed this information when booking your boat and accidentally booked for a bachelor/bachelorette party, please let us know as soon as possible! We'll cancel your reservation and refund your money.

5. Be prepared for (almost) any weather

On the water, the weather is almost always more intense than on land. When it's windy and/or cold, you'll notice it more on the water (especially when sitting still for a long time). And when the sun is shining, you'll burn faster on the water too! Also keep in mind that the weather can change quickly: for the better, but unfortunately sometimes for the worse too. None of this needs to be a problem if you have the right gear with you. Our advice: bring sunscreen and sunglasses, but always bring warm clothing – preferably waterproof – and an umbrella too. In the height of summer, swimwear can be handy for a refreshing dip. And in spring and autumn, it sometimes doesn't hurt to bring gloves and/or a hat. Better safe than sorry!

6. Leave your speakers, boomboxes, and other music equipment at home

In Amsterdam, it is legally prohibited to play music on all types of open boats. This rule was introduced to keep things livable for canal residents and to prevent nuisance. Even soft music is not allowed. Your equipment will be confiscated and the fine is a hefty €220. So consider yourself warned and leave your music equipment at home.

7. Combine your boat trip with other fun things nearby

Boats4rent is located next to the Jordaan. This charming and lively neighborhood is known for its incredibly diverse range of restaurants and bars. Plenty of options to grab a drink and/or a bite before or after your boat trip. The shopping in the area is also very varied. Nearby attractions include the Jordaan itself, the Foodhallen, the Anne Frank House, the Westerkerk, the canal belt, Vondelpark, and Leidseplein.

8. Book in advance!

When the weather is nice, we're often fully booked. And in bad weather, we sometimes decide to close. To avoid last-minute disappointments, we recommend always booking in advance. If you want to go boating today, you can call us: 020-7009377. If you want to go tomorrow or another day, you can easily and quickly book online.

We hope to see you soon at Boats4rent!
